Mia Goth’s team criticizes Instagram over AI image posted by verified fan account
Mia Goth’s representatives say a viral Instagram image of the actress was AI-generated and posted by a verified fan account they had repeatedly asked Instagram to remove. News outlets treated the image as authentic. The account appeared to be gone by Tuesday.

Repeated removal requests
Goth’s representative Christine Tripicchio told The Verge that the actress does not own or use social media accounts. She said Goth’s team had filed multiple complaints asking Instagram to remove the fan account over its repeated posting of “counterfeit, AI images” of Goth.
Tripicchio called the account’s eligibility for a blue check “disconcerting” and said it was “incomprehensible” that Instagram appeared to prioritize manipulated images over protecting a public figure’s likeness.
The account appeared to have been removed by Tuesday, October 13. Meta did not immediately respond to either outlet’s request for comment.
Verification and AI labels
Meta began selling blue verification badges several years ago, allowing accounts such as fan pages to obtain them without being operated by the person depicted. The Goth fan account had more than a million followers, according to The Verge.
Meta does not broadly ban AI-generated depictions of real people, instead labeling some AI-created content. The Verge reports that its rules may require labels for photorealistic AI videos of people but include an exception for still images.
