Shohei Ohtani to remain in Dodgers' lineup for NLCS Game 3 despite slump

Roberts keeps Ohtani in lineup

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Tuesday that Shohei Ohtani will play in Game 3 of the National League Championship Series against the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday in Los Angeles. The Brewers lead the best-of-seven series 2-0.

Roberts had planned to discuss Ohtani's health after Game 2. “He was adamant that he can help us,” Roberts said Tuesday. “He's well enough to help us win a baseball game.” Roberts said Ohtani would bat somewhere between second and sixth against Brewers left-hander Robert Gasser.

Postseason struggles

Ohtani is 1-for-7 through two NLCS games and went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in the Dodgers' 7-4 loss Monday. Across six postseason games, he is 3-for-20 with three walks and seven strikeouts; all three hits have been singles.

The slump extends beyond the playoffs. Ohtani has not homered since Aug. 18 and finished the regular season on an 11-for-70 stretch with 29 strikeouts and three extra-base hits.

Managing injuries

Roberts acknowledged that Ohtani remains bothered by left knee and right arm issues. Ohtani spent two weeks on the injured list in September and said before the division series against Atlanta that he would need to manage his injuries through the playoffs.

Speaking through an interpreter Tuesday, Ohtani said his symptoms had “subdued a lot” since his injured-list stint. “The symptoms shouldn't be the reason why I can't hit,” he said, taking responsibility for his results and describing an ongoing effort to adjust his swing.
