Ellis cleared to play
The NCAA ruled St. John’s point guard Quinn Ellis eligible Tuesday, Oct. 13, ahead of the team’s Wednesday exhibition against Drexel at Carnesecca Arena.
Ellis, 23, played professionally for Olimpia Milano last season, averaging 8.2 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.5 assists in 36 EuroLeague games. CBS Sports reported that he was cleared because he remained within the five-year window after graduating high school and had his academic transcripts in order; he has one year of eligibility remaining.
Hall’s case remains unresolved
A Queens judge left Keyshawn Hall’s temporary restraining order in place Tuesday, allowing the Auburn transfer to play until a ruling on his request for a preliminary injunction. No timeline was given for that decision.
Hall is seeking a fifth season of eligibility. According to the Yahoo Sports report, the NCAA approved five years of eligibility within a five-year span in June, but did not extend the change to last season’s seniors, including Hall. He averaged 19.3 points and 7.1 rebounds for Auburn last season.
Forward Babacar Sane also has an unresolved eligibility case, with another hearing scheduled for Nov. 9. CBS Sports reported that the NCAA ruled him ineligible over a 2024 Exhibit 10 contract with the Utah Jazz; Yahoo Sports reported that he can play until at least that hearing.
A reshaped roster
Ellis’ arrival allows Ian Jackson to return to shooting guard after spending much of last season at point guard, according to Yahoo Sports. Coach Rick Pitino praised Ellis in May as a playmaker and passer who would improve his teammates.
St. John’s must replace all five starters from last season, including Zuby Ejiofor. The team opens the regular season against Monmouth on Nov. 2 and is seeking its third consecutive Big East regular-season and conference-tournament titles.
