Appeal for permanent staff
Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has appealed to the government for additional doctors and nurses, saying staffing shortages are straining its Accident and Emergency Centre and Intensive Care Unit. Chief Executive Officer Dr Yakubu Seidu Adam renewed the appeal during an engagement with Parliament’s Health Committee.
Dr Adam said the hospital’s 64-bed emergency centre was overstretched by accident victims and other emergency cases referred from across the country.
Reliance on trainees
Dr Adam said many of the hospital’s doctors were trainees who left after completing their programmes, making it difficult to sustain staffing levels. He called for more permanent medical officers and nurses to support timely patient care.
Management had already raised the staffing concerns with the hospital’s Director of Human Resources and the Minister of Health, he said.
Committee calls for more emergency beds
Health Committee Chairperson Dr Mark Kurt Nawaane said measures were in the pipeline to improve working conditions and address staffing gaps. He praised staff for their dedication and said the emergency unit should not turn away patients.
Describing emergency capacity as roughly 60 beds and “woefully inadequate,” Dr Nawaane called for bed numbers to be at least doubled. Hospital management has also advocated a new facility to ease pressure on the existing emergency centre.
