Petition dismissed
Judge Nicholas Briggs dismissed a bankruptcy petition against Jamie Carragher, 48, at the Insolvency and Companies Court on Tuesday. The petition had been brought in August over an unpaid tax bill owed to HM Revenue and Customs.
Kevin Hassan, representing HMRC, told the hearing in London that the debt had been paid, meaning Carragher will not be made bankrupt as a result of these proceedings.
Amount not disclosed
No figure for the settled debt was given in court. BBC Sport reported that it had previously been said to be in the region of £700,000 to £800,000; the circumstances behind the original debt were not disclosed at the hearing.
Liverpool and broadcasting career
Carragher spent his entire professional playing career at Liverpool, making 737 appearances and winning the Champions League in 2005 before retiring in 2013.
He has since become a television football pundit, appearing on Sky Sports and CBS Sports.
