Five-episode return
HBO has greenlit a limited, five-episode revival of “Girls,” with production scheduled to begin in 2027, a decade after the original series ended.
Creator and star Lena Dunham will return as Hannah Horvath, alongside Allison Williams as Marnie Michaels, Jemima Kirke as Jessa Johansson, Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna Shapiro and Andrew Rannells as Elijah Krantz.
Revisiting the characters
Plot details have not been disclosed. HBO comedy chief Amy Gravitt said the revival would shift Dunham’s focus from the turmoil of the characters’ twenties to the milestone of turning 40.
“We always said we would only return to Girls if there was a specific story we were burning to tell,” Dunham said in a statement. She said she began imagining the characters in the present day around her 40th birthday.
Returning producers
Dunham, Judd Apatow, Ilene S. Landress and Michael P. Cohen will executive produce the revival. Williams, Kirke, Mamet and Rannells will serve as co-executive producers.
Original co-showrunner Jenni Konner is not involved, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Adam Driver, who played Hannah’s on-and-off boyfriend, was not named among the returning cast.
The original series aired on HBO from 2012 to 2017, following a group of friends navigating their twenties in New York City. It earned 19 Emmy nominations and won twice.
