Clearance reported
Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Baah Forson has reportedly granted financial clearance for construction works on the Samenya–New Town road in Jomoro Municipality in the Western Region, alongside rehabilitation of the Ankobra Bridge.
The clearance is a step towards implementation, with further procurement, contractual and administrative requirements still relevant. The amount approved, official road construction start date and bridge rehabilitation timeline have not been confirmed.
Road and bridge concerns
The 25-kilometre road links Samenye Barrier through Half-Assini to New Town at the Côte d’Ivoire border. Its poor condition has prompted calls for improvements from residents, motorists, traders, Jomoro MP Dorcas Affo-Toofey, chiefs and other stakeholders.
Residents appealed for urgent improvements to the municipality’s roads in July 2026, citing effects on transport, healthcare access and economic activity. In August, residents also called for urgent rehabilitation of the Ankobra Bridge, warning that its deteriorating condition posed a potential danger to road users.
Expected benefits
The projects are expected to improve connectivity and transport safety, ease the movement of goods and people, and support local economic activity. Communities reliant on farming, fishing and trading are among those expected to benefit from more reliable road infrastructure.
