ECG explains supply disruptions
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) attributed recent outages in parts of the Ashanti Region to equipment failures, cable faults and ongoing infrastructure upgrades. Officials gave the explanation at a meeting with the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) in Kumasi on October 16, 2026.
ECG’s network maintenance manager, James Mensah Yevunya, identified two current transformer blasts on the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) network and a cable fault at the Ridge Bulk Supply Point as causes of the supply problems. He said upgrade work by both companies had added operational constraints.
Ridge fault affects communities
In an October 15 notice, ECG’s Ashanti West Region said an underground cable fault at the Ridge Bulk Supply Point near Georgia Hotel in Kumasi had interrupted electricity supply. Engineers were working to repair the fault and restore power, the company said.
Affected locations included Abuakwa, Sepaase, Manhyia, Bremang, Kronum, Pankrono, Adum, Kwadaso, Asafo Market and Kumasi Technical University, along with other communities. ECG apologised for the inconvenience.
Upgrades and public communication
Yevunya said GRIDCo was upgrading transformer capacity supplying Ridge from 50/66MVA to 120/145MVA, while ECG was installing new 8-way 33kV panels to accommodate the increased capacity and improve distribution. He assured PURC that ECG would expedite its installation work.
PURC’s Ashanti regional manager, Edward Boduah Kingston, urged ECG to provide regular project and operational updates so the public could receive timely, accurate information. He also called for adequate resources for ECG’s public relations office to help explain technical issues and service challenges.
