The agreement
Payton Pritchard has agreed to a two-year, $44.2 million extension with the Boston Celtics, CAA co-head of basketball Austin Brown and agent Max Saidman told ESPN on Tuesday. The agreement includes a mutual option for the 2029-30 season.
The extension follows his current contract, which ends in 2028. Pritchard is set to earn more than $21 million in 2028-29, with the following season’s option worth nearly $23 million. His current deal pays $7.8 million this season and $8.3 million next season.
A growing role
Pritchard averaged career highs of 17 points, 5.2 assists and 3.9 rebounds last season while starting 50 games. He took on a larger offensive role as Jayson Tatum missed most of the season.
The 28-year-old guard won an NBA championship in 2024 and the Sixth Man of the Year award in 2025. Boston selected him with the No. 26 pick in the 2020 draft, and the extension would keep him with the team through at least his ninth season.
Assessment of the deal
ESPN’s contract analysis gave the extension an A, arguing that Pritchard’s production makes him worth more than the agreed salary. It cited his career 39% three-point shooting and above-average scoring efficiency in five of his six NBA seasons.
The analysis said his existing four-year, $30 million contract limited his next extension to a $22.1 million annual salary. It also noted a potential risk for Boston: Pritchard will be 30 when the new deal begins.
