Two-game suspension
The NFL announced Tuesday that Chicago Bears defensive end Montez Sweat has been suspended for two games without pay for violating its performance-enhancing substances policy. The specific substance involved was not disclosed.
Sweat will miss the Week 6 road game against the Atlanta Falcons and the Week 7 matchup with the New England Patriots. He is eligible for reinstatement Oct. 23, with his next game scheduled for Nov. 2 at Seattle.
Defensive depth tested
The suspension follows an injury to fellow defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo, who left Chicago’s 31-7 loss at Green Bay with a quad injury and did not return. Coach Ben Johnson had no update on his health Monday.
The Bears activated defensive end Shemar Turner from the physically unable to perform list Tuesday to take Sweat’s place on the 53-man roster. Turner, a 2025 second-round pick, has practiced since Sept. 23 after suffering a season-ending ACL tear during his rookie season.
Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen said last week that players returning from the PUP list should be incorporated gradually rather than expected to play full-time immediately. Austin Booker leads Chicago with four sacks, while James Lynch could step in if Odeyingbo cannot play.
Sweat’s role in Chicago
Sweat has seven tackles and two sacks through Chicago’s first five games. He led the Bears with 10 sacks last season and also topped the team in tackles for loss and quarterback hits.
He has missed only one game since joining Chicago three years ago and has led the team in sacks in each of those three seasons.
