Announcement and conditional support
US President Trump said in a social media post on Sunday that an energy ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia had been reached and was “effective immediately”.
Ukraine’s President Zelensky said his country was willing to support an energy ceasefire if Russia did the same. He said it could “become a major step toward ending the war”.
Uncertainty as winter approaches
Moscow had not confirmed its agreement, according to the BBC. Zelensky also said Russia struck a Ukrainian power plant in Kharkiv “immediately after” Trump’s announcement.
The BBC reported that Ukrainians were facing another winter with electricity outages that leave people without heat, light or water.
