Red card brings suspension
Michael Olise will be suspended for Bayern Munich’s Champions League match against Arsenal in Munich next week after being sent off in a 3-3 draw at Norwegian champions Viking.
The winger received two yellow cards in quick succession: the first for a foul and the second after throwing the ball into Viking captain Zlatko Tripic’s face. Bayern were left with 10 players and 16 minutes remaining, before Herman Haugen headed in a 90th-minute equaliser.
Bayern’s comeback undone
Viking led 2-0 at halftime after Gianni Stensness headed in a corner with 72 seconds played and Peter Christiansen finished a counterattack in the 38th minute.
Harry Kane pulled Bayern back into the match with a penalty after Konrad Laimer was fouled, then headed in Joshua Kimmich’s cross to equalise on the hour. Luis Diaz put Bayern ahead after a Kane chip found Laimer, whose saved shot rebounded into Diaz’s path.
Kane scored for a ninth consecutive Champions League match, equalling Robert Lewandowski’s club record and moving within two games of Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of 11.
Kompany and Kane react
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany called the red card “super dumb” and said Olise regretted letting the team down. “It was our own fault,” Kompany said.
Kane said Bayern’s first half had been poor but that they had fought their way back before the dismissal changed the match. He said Olise had to take responsibility and learn from the mistake, adding: “It’s a shame because we have important games ahead of us.”
