Sentence handed down
Duane “Keffe D” Davis was sentenced in a Nevada court on Tuesday to 40 years to life for orchestrating Tupac Shakur’s murder. The judge imposed 20 years to life for first-degree murder and another 20 years to life for a deadly weapon enhancement. Davis, 63, had faced a maximum sentence of life without parole.
Davis is the only person convicted in connection with Shakur’s killing. His lawyers have indicated they intend to appeal.
Davis’s statements at the heart of the case
Prosecutors relied heavily on Davis’s public accounts of the shooting, including interviews and his 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend. They argued that he orchestrated the attack and supplied the gun, rather than firing it himself.
Davis had discussed his role with police in 2008 under an agreement protecting him from prosecution. The BBC reported that his later public statements voided that protection, allowing a judge to admit the police interview at trial.
His defense argued that his accounts were embellished to sell books and make money, and that no physical evidence tied him to the killing. Davis continued to maintain his innocence after his conviction.
Family asks for maximum punishment
Before sentencing, Shakur’s sister Sekyiwa spoke about her grief, trauma and relationship with her brother. His brother Maurice urged the judge to impose the longest possible sentence, describing the killing’s devastating impact on their family.
Prosecutor Marc DiGiacomo also sought the maximum sentence, citing Davis’s criminal history. Judge Carli Kierny told Davis: “You don’t get to take a man from his family. You don’t get to take his very life, his whole future from him and just walk away from it.”
A decades-long investigation
Shakur was shot on September 7, 1996, near the Las Vegas Strip and died six days later. He was 25. His murder remained unsolved for decades before Davis’s arrest in 2023.
Davis’s memoir described the attack as retaliation for an altercation involving Shakur and Davis’s nephew, Orlando Anderson. Anderson denied involvement in the killing and died in an unrelated shooting in 1998.
